Forging the path ahead
We’re super excited to share the news that draw.io is now a Forge app! As the first major app to be released on Forge, this is huge news! But what is Forge, and what does being on Forge actually mean?
What is Forge?
In Atlassian’s own words, “Forge is Atlassian’s new development platform for building Jira and Confluence Cloud apps. It’s designed to revolutionize how our cloud products are customized and extended.”
Developers build apps for Confluence and Jira in Atlassian’s own preferred cloud-based platform. This means not only is it smoothly integrated, with Forge doing most of the heavy lifting in terms of app security, but that these Forge apps are reliable, secure, and scalable.
What securities do Forge apps provide?
For companies looking for total security and peace of mind, this solution provides the highest level of security – all of your data lives on trusted servers, including the apps themselves.
The criteria for an Atlassian Marketplace app to achieve Forge status is incredibly strict. By definition, a Forge app is one that uses the Forge Manifest. This brings plenty of advantages to both the app developers and its users:
-
Consistency and structure: The Forge Manifest provides a clear structure for the app, ensuring it runs smoothly within Atlassian products. This structure helps prevent bugs and makes it easier to manage and update the app.
-
Enhanced security: The Manifest specifies permissions and access controls, so the app only accesses the data and functions it truly needs, protecting user data and meeting Atlassian’s stringent security standards.
-
Easier deployment and maintenance: By defining key settings, the Manifest simplifies deployment and ongoing maintenance. Developers can update or troubleshoot more efficiently since Forge relies on this predefined setup.
-
Seamless integration: The Manifest helps Forge integrate the app properly within Atlassian tools, making sure it appears in the right places, such as menus or dashboards, creating a better user experience.
-
Compliance with Atlassian standards: Following the Forge Manifest ensures that the app adheres to Atlassian’s guidelines, which can be important for reliability and approval for apps on the Atlassian Marketplace.
Overall, abiding by the Forge Manifest leads to more reliable, secure, and user-friendly apps that integrate smoothly into the Atlassian ecosystem. For draw.io users specifically, we know that many companies are abiding by compliance standards, and striving for data protection certifications (like ISO 27000 , 27001 and 27002) and the GDPR. They’re also looking to maintain squeaky-clean audit trails, and our Forge app will bolster those efforts to ensure high compliance and auditing standards.
